The newspaper had run into trouble when it was forced to drop its slogan "Our responsibility is to report everything".

Propaganda mandarins had criticised it in June for breaking the story of the killings of seven rural protesters in Dingzhou, northern China, as well as its sympathetic reports about a migrant worker who killed his foreman and three others after his wages went unpaid.

The informal strike at the Beijing News was highly unusual for China's entirely state-controlled media. It reflected tensions between communist leaders and media outlets, which have pushed the limits of official tolerance in recent years, sometimes drawing punishment for aggressive reporting on corruption and other politically charged issues.

For some Chinese political analysts and dissidents, these attacks on leading journalists dashed hopes that a new era of press freedom would begin when President Hu Jintao and his deputy, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, took power in early 2003.
